Sylvia has degrees from both Texas A&M and Oregon State in Horticultural Science and is an Emerita Senior Associate Dean of Administration and retired Professor of Horticultural Science in CALS at NC State. Sylvia and a co-inventor developed the use of a compound known as 1-MCP, which makes fruits and flowers last longer. That invention earned Sylvia a spot in the 2018 class of fellows in the National Academy of Inventors, the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and Fellow of the American and International Societies for Horticultural Science. She is an avid gardener and has always had a fond appreciation for the JCRA. She is a current donor and JCRA member.
